Low income older Minnesotans who need repairs and safety updates in their homes can apply for free assistance right now.
Applications for home help are available through the end of the year through the nonprofit Rebuilding Together Minnesota.
“We can help with the small home repairs that can make a big difference, like ramps or grab bars or stair rails that prevent falls,” said Kathryn Greiner, executive director of Rebuilding Together Minnesota.
The desire to age in place at home appears to be universal, regardless of income.
A national AARP study from earlier this fall found that 75% of older adults want to stay in their own homes. The study also revealed that the cost of maintaining a home is a major concern; 43% of the older American surveyed anticipated needing to make adaptations to their homes to accommodate their balance, strength and mobility changes.
Smaller problems can create big barriers for low income seniors.
“It could be something as simple as two stairs are needed for coming in from the garage. We can help with little things that help them maintain independence. It might be a door that doesn’t shut or lock correctly; maybe its a faulty outlet or a plumbing leak,” said Greiner. “These are things we take care of so they can keep their bills smaller.”
Other seniors may qualify to be given new appliances.
“We replace appliances like stoves or washers and dryers. If you have appliances that aren’t working, give us a call and we will see what help you with,” Greiner said.
The cost of the work done by Rebuilding Together Minnesota is free and will never need to be paid back. The program is so affordable because it relies on teams of volunteers and corporate sponsors to assist with home repairs for low income homeowner who qualify.
“We have different groups of volunteers who build ramps for us from April to November.
They love to give back,” she said “We have great team members and volunteers who step up to make sure people can stay safe in homes they love.”
